So, by observing the featured image, you can probably already tell what is going to be added into The Master Chief Collection. That’s right. Halo 3: ODST’s campaign is coming to Halo MCC! Before I go into further detail, here is everything that will be included for those who played The Master Chief Collection since launch day (11/11/14), until 12/19/14, free of charge:
- Halo 3: ODST campaign at 1080p and 60 FPS
- Remastered version of the map, Relic, for Halo 2: Anniversary multiplayer*
- 1 month of Xbox Live Gold
- Exclusive in-game Nameplate
- Exclusive in-game Avatar
*will be available to everyone
A couple of things on ODST. First, it is kind of disappointing that Firefight will not be included. I thought Firefight was the best part of ODST, and it would have been a great addition to Halo MCC, which could use some more co-op modes. However, the first 10 episodes of Halo 4’s Spartan Ops are being added into the game next week, so that kind of solves that. Still, I enjoyed Firefight, and would have liked to see it again. I won’t complain though. ODST’s campaign being added, free of charge!
In addition, it seems that ODST will only be available for those who played between launch day and the day 343i announced this. I find that a bit strange, since anyone who gets this game for Christmas or later won’t be able to play ODST. However, it would not surprise me at all to see 343i eventually make it available to everyone.
I thought it was an interesting decision to remake Relic and add it into the Halo 2: Anniversary rotation. It is a solid map, and is good for both Slayer and Objective. Can’t say it was first on my list of maps that I would have liked to have been remade, but more maps for Halo 2: Anniversary is always a good thing, especially since there are only six right now.
As for the other things included, free Xbox Live Gold is always nice, so there’s that. The Nameplate and Avatar aren’t anything special to me. It would be funny if they were something like “I survived Halo MCC’s launch and all I got was this stupid Nameplate/Avatar.” Ahh, well, everything else we’re getting makes up for it.
So when are we going to get all of this? Well, the Halo 3: ODST campaign and the Relic remake are expected to be released sometime in Spring 2015. The 1 month of Xbox Live Gold will be available as early as mid-January 2015, and the Nameplate and Avatar are set to be available in December 2014.
All in all, I’d say that this compensation is fantastic. Could it have been better? Yeah, if, say, ODST’s Firefight was included, and instead of one multiplayer map for H2A, we were getting two or three. However, it just feels wrong to complain about stuff that we are getting for free. I’ll gladly take what 343i is giving to us. It is a great gesture on 343i’s part as a means of saying how they know that they screwed up and want to make it up to us. I am quite happy with what we are getting.
